Product Description

Rødvig slaked lime is a white lime putty (calcium hydroxide, Ca (OH)2), which, in contrast to hydraulic lime, hardens by the addition of air (absorption of CO2).

It is manufactured from Faxe lump lime, which is slaked with water and then stored in underground lime pits. It has been stored since 1994. During the long-term storage the lime pulverizes into fine particles - down to less than 0.01 mm, causing the slaked lime to get a particularly good adherence and a great flexibility.

It is beneficial to use our extra-matured lime for particularly demanding tasks, such as renovation mortar and for plaster work on old historical buildings of unhewn stones or soft hand-moulded tiles to which very calcareous mortars have been used. The long-storage causes the lime to pulverize even further and become more flexible.

Field of Application

Rødvig slaked lime is used for common lime washing, where the lime putty is dissolved in water in the ratio 1:5. Additionally, Rødvig slaked lime is used for grouting, plastering and bricklaying. Therefore, it is a part of a wide range of our ready-mixed products, such as Rødvig lime milk, sand lime, lime water and various mortar mixes – both in natural and coloured variants.

Packaging

Rødvig slaked lime is delivered as a white putty with clear lime water at the top of 20-liter buckets (25 kg) with hermetic lids.

Additional Information

KALK A/S has been the market leader for many years with products used for renovation of conservation and listed buildings among others. The products can also be used for new construction because of the good physical properties of the material:

  • Great flexibility in use
  • Great elasticity and adhesion
  • High tensile strength
  • Good porosity, which provides excellent insulation and moisture conditions.

We have extensive experience in assisting clients in the use of our products. The technical guidance, which we can offer, merely serves to aid you with experiences. Therefore, we do not take on the responsibility of being planning technicians. With regards to renovation work, we can refer to technicians who are familiar with renovation work on buildings worthy of preservation.

Mixing

Rødvig slaked lime is part of a wide range of our ready-mixed products but you can also manufacture lime milk, lime water and various mortars with Rødvig slaked lime yourself. Below is a description of how to do this.

For lime milk:
For the manufacturing of lime milk, the well-matured, wet slaked Rødvig slaked lime is mixed with lime water in a strongly attenuated solution, approx. 1 part lime putty : 5 parts lime water for a lime solution of approx. 15%, which should not be exceeded.

The lime putty is stirred thoroughly with the lime water in a tub by using e.g. a drilling machine with a whisk attached.

The lime milk should be prepared at least 24 hours before use and stored in plastic buckets with hermetic lids. The purpose of the lid is to stop the passage of the air and thereby a quick hardening on the surface in form of a layer of lime crystals CaCO3.

For lime water:
Lime water can be manufactured on the construction site by mixing 1 part Rødvig slaked lime (lime putty) with 5 parts tab water. These parts are whipped thoroughly until the lime putty has completely blended in with the water. The mixture is left for at least 24 hours, after which the white pigments have precipitated and the clear, saturated solution of calcium hydroxide – lime water Ca(OH)2 – floats on the surface in the tub. It is recommended that you cover the tub securely with plastic in order to stop the passage of the air and thereby a quick hardening on the surface in form of a layer of lime crystals CaCO3.

Lime water is suck or scooped very gently into buckets that are closed hermitically. Be careful not to stir so much in the lime water that the white pigments mix with the lime water.

After the lime water has been scooped over, you may repeat the process by adding the same measure of tab water. It is advisable to stop after the fifth time, after which the white lime can be thrown away.

For ground whitewashing (brush coating):
1 part Kronhøj mortar sand no. 00 (0.0-0.3mm)
4 parts slaked Rødvig slaked lime (lime putty).

Attenuated with lime water to make a suitable applying consistence depending on the condition of the base (approx. as light sour cream or similar).

Before whitewashing the walls are dampened with lime water. The surface must not be soaked and shiny. Leave to set for at least 4-5 days.

For lime mortar (Rødvig slaked lime mortar), 1:3:
1 part Rødvig slaked lime (e.g. plastic bucket 25 kilos) and 3 parts Kronhøj mortar sand. When stirring smaller portions, a bricklayer tub is used, and the mortar is stirred with a whisk. First, 1 bucket of sand is scooped in, then the lime and next the last two buckets of sand. The mortar putty is whipped well for approx. 5 minutes, so that the mortar can breathe. When working with large portions, a compulsory mixing machine is used, where the dosing should be done as previously mentioned.

For lime mortar (Rødvig finishing coat), 1:1:
1 part Rødvig slaked lime (e.g. plastic bucket 25 kilos) and 1 part sand of grain size 0-0,3 mm. When stirring smaller portions, a bricklayer tub is used, and the mortar is stirred with a whisk. First, 1 bucket of sand is scooped in, then the lime. The mortar putty is whipped well for approx. 5 minutes, so that the mortar can breathe. When working with large portions, a compulsory mixing machine is used, where the dosing should be done as previously mentioned.

Limitations of Use

Rødvig slaked lime should not be used when the temperature is below 5° degrees and above 20° degrees. The work should be carried out in the shadow.

Storage

Rødvig slaked lime should be stored with hermetic lids and in a frost-free location. The durability is unlimited if these conditions are met.
