Product Description

Kronhøj Mortar Sand is kiln-dried quartz sand of high quality. The sand is particularly suitable for the manufacturing of lime mortars.

It has the following specifications:

Shape of grain: Round/angular round
Hardness: 7 according to the Mohs scale
Density: Approx. 1550 kilos per. m3

Kronhøj Mortar Sand is a key element in all our finished mortar mixes.

We also sell pure Kronhøj Mortar Sand in various grain mixtures to customers who want to mix their mortars in relation to specific needs and requirements.

Field of Application

We sort the dried quartz sand in 10 different standard grain sizes. From these different grain sizes, we can make mixtures of quartz sand depending on the task:

For water scouring and thin plaster: 0.0-0.3 mm or 0.0-1.0 mm

For normal plaster: 0.0-2.2 mm

For brick mortar: 0.0-5.0 mm

Packaging

Kronhøj Mortar Sand comes in air and watertight plastic bags of 25 kg. For large projects, we can deliver in Big Bags or silo. For further information, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Guidance

Mixing

In 1987, we began something new, which was mixing ready-made lime mortars for several large building projects, following recipes and previous laboratory tests at the Masonry Center.

We can also absolutely recommend that the mortars are mixed according to weight and on site, because we think it is important that builders and masons are familiar with the different mixing methods and are also familiar with the raw products used in the mortars they work with.

Lime mortar and hydraulic lime mortar:
In the following, we will go through 6 mortar types with which we have good experiences. Here, they are called: I, II, III, IV, V and VI.

With regards to cubic measures, the mixing ratios applying for our Røvig jurassic lime are used; as the density of the lime is of significance for mixing, using this method:

1:3        1½:3       (Kh 100/400 – Type III)
2:1:9    2:1½:9    (KKh 50/50/575 – Type IV)
1:1:6    1:1½:6    (KKh 35/65/500 – Type V)
1:2:9    1:3:9        (KKh 20/80/475 – Type VI)

Consumption:
A good rule of thumb for the calculation of the consumption of mortar in measures is to multiply the number of square metres on the surface with the thickness of the layer in millimetres with 1.6 kilos. Ergo: m2 x mm x 1.6= kg

Type: Type I

Name: Lime mortar (Rødvig slaked lime mortar K 100/750)

Mixture, cubic measure: 1:3. 1 part Rødvig slaked lime (e.g. plastic bucket 25 kilos) and 3 parts Kronhøj mortar sand. When stirring smaller portions, a bricklayer tub is used, and the mortar is stirred with a whisk. First, 1 bucket of sand is scooped in, then the lime and next the last two buckets of sand. The mortar putty is whipped well for approx. 5 minutes, so that the mortar can breathe. When working with large portions, a compulsory mixing machine is used, where the dosing should be done as previously mentioned.

Mixture, cubic measure: K 100/750, 12%, Ca(OH)2. As the above-mentioned name refers to dry measures, and the water content of the lime putty is approx. 50%, 200 kilos of lime putty should be weighed to 750 kilos of sand.

Application: This mortar is suitable for all common bricklayer procedures for renovation. For bricklaying, jointing and plastering.

Type: Type II

Name: Lime mortar (Rødvig finishing coat A K 100/250)

Mixture, cubic measure: 1:1. 1 part Rødvig slaked lime (e.g. plastic bucket 25 kilos) and 1 part sand of grain size 0-0,3 mm. When stirring smaller portions, a bricklayer tub is used, and the mortar is stirred with a whisk. First, 1 bucket of sand is scooped in, then the lime. The mortar putty is whipped well for approx. 5 minutes, so that the mortar can breathe. When working with large portions, a compulsory mixing machine is used, where the dosing should be done as previously mentioned.

Mixture, weight measure: K 100/250, 29% Ca(OH)2. As the name refers to dry measures, and the water content of the lime putty is approx. 50%, 200 kilos of lime putty should be weighed to 250 kilos of sand.

Application: This mortar is particularly suitable for applying finishing coat on interior walls.

Type: Type III

Name: Hydraulic lime mortar (Rødvig jurassic mortar Kh 100/400)

Mixture, cubic measure: 1½:3. 1½ part Rødvig jurassic lime and 3 parts Kronhøj mortar sand. It is dry-mixed and a suitable amount of water is added. Mixed in a compulsory mixing machine for 20 minutes.
